Day 1:
We neet you at Adelaide Airport, or the train at Gawler Central. Or you may
choose to drive into our country property and leave your car at Stockport during
the journey. Join us for lunch, afternoon tea, and pre-dinner drinks at the
Stables.
Afternoon trip briefing. Familiarization with equipment and routines, issue of
trip maps, etc. A walk around the country area, or just relax and settle in.
We travel to a local country pub for Dinner. An opportunity to socialise with
your fellow travellers and talk about the trip ahead.
Day 2: Depart Stockport 8.00am to
Pt Augusta and along the Eyre Highway to Iron Knob, home of South
Australia’s iron ore industry. On to the Gawler Ranges and Mt Ive , a
working sheep station, staying overnight in their refurbished shearers
quarters.
Day 3: A day tour from Mt Ive including some of the Gawler ranges
National Park, Lake Gairdner (used by Rosco McGlashen for his world
speed records) and a station tour. See amazing rock formations and salt
lakes. Overnight at Mt Ive. This is an experience not to be missed!
Day 4: Mt Ive To Streaky Bay .We travel through the Gawler Ranges
National Park, visiting Pildappa Rock, some say even more spectacular
than Wave Rock in Western Australia. Then on to Minippa and down to the
lovely coastal town of Streaky Bay, with its spectacular coastline.
Day 5: Streaky Bay to Nundroo-
Following the coastline (more stunning coastline views) we visit Ceduna and
Thevenard and then travel onto the town of windmills, Penong. Then on to our
overnight accommodation at the little town of Nundroo.
Day 6: Nundroo – We head out in the
morning to the magnificent Bunda Cliffs on the edge of the mighty Great
Australian Bight. We go into the scenic lookouts at the Head Of Bight
for the days Whale watching. We will return to Nundroo, for a second
night.
Day
7: Today we drive back to Ceduna and then down to Smoky Bay for our
last day on the seaside before heading inland.
Day 8: We head north toward
Kingoonya,once a bustling stop on the Ghan railway, now with only a
handful of residents in town. stopping at Historic Ruins, incredible
early water storage systems, salt lakes and ancient rock formations.,
Overnight at the Kingoonya Hotel, an experience to remember! If timing
is right, we will be able to wave to the Indian Pacific as it travels
past the Hotel.
Day 9: Leaving Kingoonya we follow the Trans Australia railway to the
historic abandoned town of Tarcoola. After exploration of this old
goldmining and railway town we head off for Coober Pedy where we will
spend a night in one of the amazing underground motels.
Day 10: Next day after a tour of
the town and surrounds we continue on over the desolation of the Moon
Plain and on to Ackeringa Homestead and the Ackeringa Hills. Overnight
in the renovated shearers quarters.
Day 11: The little known Painted Desert.
These wonderful coloured hills are truly a magical place, living up to its name.
Explore the sand and rocks or just sit on the hillside and watch the changing
colours of the desert rock formations during the passage of the day. After
sunrise on the Painted Desert it is off down the Oodnadatta Track to Oodnadatta,
a tour of the Old Ghan Museum, perhaps a coffee at the Pink Roadhouse and then
South along sections of the original Ghan to Algebuckena Bridge and the
Oodnadatta Track to William Creek Overnight in Cabins
Day 12: South down the Oodnadatta track to
Coward Springs and the unique moonscape of the ancient mound springs of the
great artesian basin. We then follow the Oodnadatta Track south to Bopechee and
take the Borefield Road to Roxby Downs. I am trying to organize a Tour of
Olympic Dam from here.,
Day 13: From Roxby to Andamooka
a bit of exploration and then cross country on 4WD tracks through Mulgaria
Station to the abandoned township of Farina (once proclaimed as the wheat
growing capital of South Australia) and on to Marree. Here we have a flight over
the Lake itself. (INCLUDED IN THE ITINERARY). Dinner at the Hotel. Overnight in
the Motel
Days 14 & 15: Leigh Creek
Coalfields, , Copley, the old railway town of Beltana, the remains of the
Sliding Rock copper mine, through the northern Flinders ranges and gorges to the
shearers’ quarters in the privately managed Warrawaweena Conservation Park, home
to a diverse range of fauna, and flora. Two nights.
Day 16: Across the hills to via
rugged and scenic 4WD tracks, through old government roads, historical monuments
and some spectacular Flinders views, to Moolloooloo a historic sheep station in
the northern Flinders Ranges . Overnight in Shearers Quarters
Day 17: The final day takes in
part of the Flinders and Hawker. Returning home via Quorn, Wilmimgton and a
visit to historic Laura . ETA Stockport late afternoon where we all enjoy an
evening meal and stay overnight.
Day 18: After a hearty
breakfast, and farewell to your new friends we travel to Adelaide for a final
goodbye at the airport.
