ACROSS THE SIMPSON DESERT via THE RIG ROAD

11 DAY ITINERARY - $TBA per person

This tour is the longest route across the Simpson Desert taking tracks forged in the 50's during the search for oil - flooding plains, endless red sandhills, oases with lush vegetation, hot springs and vast expanses of saltpans. For ten days you will travel remote country explored and settled by our pioneers who had extraordinary courage, fortitude and inner resources.

The magnificent soaring ranges, deep gullies and tall gum trees of the Flinders Ranges make a perfect finale to a trip through the outback of South Australia and Queensland.

A real Four Wheel Drive Adventure Holiday covering 3,000 km.

Day 1-2: Departing Stockport 7: 00am we head north stopping off at Andamooka for a guided tour of the Opal Fields with a local identity. Overnight Bush Camp. Taking the Borefield Road, we pick up the Qodnadatta Track to William Creek for our first night in an Outback Pub. Includes flight over Lake Eyre.

Day 3: After a hearty breakfast we continue north to Algebuckina Historic Site, Oodnadatta and onto Dalhousie Springs. Overnight Bush Camp.

Day 4: This oasis in the Witjira National Park has large pools, palm trees, reeds and hot springs below limestone cliffs. Time to explore, photograph and relax before the first leg across the Simpson. East to Freeth Junction, Purni Bore and south along the Rig Road. Overnight Bush Camp.

Day 5-6: We now follow the Rig Road through the Poolanna Lake area linking with the K1 Line to Poeppel Corner and the QAA Line. Overnight Bush Camps.

Day 7: More sandhill country heading due east to Birdsville, across Eyre Creek with "Big Red" ahead. This large red dune has tried out (and conquered) many four wheel drives; there is an alternate route to the north. Overnight in the Caravan Park, dinner at the Hotel.

Day 8: South down the Birdsville Track, across Coopers Creek heading for Marree. Overnight Bush Camp.

Day 9-10: To Lyndhurst, south to a station in the Northern Flinders Ranges via narrow tracks through gullies and along ridges. Overnight shearers' quarters in the heart of the Ranges. The final day takes in part of the Central Flinders and Hawker. Returning via Orroroo, Jamestown and Clare. E.T.A. Stockport 5:30pm.
