BILL’S NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2010
Welcome to 2010, and what a Great start to the year. Since just
before Christmas from the Kimberleys to Queensland the rain has
been pouring down in Outback Australia. Our friends Toni and Greg
Sherwin on Kilcowera Station have had nearly eight inches of rain
since December, the best they have received for many years. Every
river in Western Queensland including The Cooper Creek ,Diamantina,
Bulloo Parroo, Warrego and the Darling are in flood or have
flooded. Water is pouring into Menindee Lakes, by the time we get
there in April both Lake Weatherall and Lake Parmeroo will be full.
The birdlife that follows floods like these is usually prolific and
starts a breeding cycle almost immediately. How the birds know and
how they navigate to these enormous new lakes remains a mystery,
but they come in their thousands every time.
They are even talking about letting some of the water run down to
the parched lower lakes in South Australia, a revolutionary idea in
today’s convoluted river politics. One land owner in NSW told me the
water from the Parroo is travelling through his property at walking
pace, about seven kilometers wide and a foot deep. He is pretty
happy about that!
There has also been media talk about the water reaching Lake Eyre,
but I am a bit skeptical about that. Another big rain might do the
job, But in the meantime places such as the World Heritage Coongie
Lakes and other flood out areas will benefit enormously.
The first opportunity we will have to enjoy seeing all of this will be
on our “ Outback to the Simpson “ journey commencing at Stockport
on Sunday the 18th of April. With a night at Menindee Lakes, two
nights at Kilcowera Station in South west Queensland (including a
Dinner under the Stars, provided by our hosts Toni and Greg) and a
day trip out to Coongie Lakes and a day in the Simpson Desert just a
few of the highlights it will be a great journey. Hopefully we will also
have the opportunity of dining on the wonderful organic Dorper
Lamb at Kallara Station on the Darling.. We now have bookings
sufficient to guarantee departure, Be in it!!.
We have just returned from the Coorong Wetlands in the South East
where the water from this year’s wonderful winter rains has
accumulated in great quantities. Birdlife was prolific and the included
one and a half hour flight over the Lakes , beaches and Wetlands
was voted the highlight of the trip by our happy travellers.
I have Scheduled another 6 night South East/Coorong trip on 31st
October, CALL ME IF YOU ARE INTERESTED
The EASTER IN THE FLINDERS RANGES 1 - 6TH APRIL
Adventure also has enough bookings to guarantee departure and I am
told the Flinders has had some very good summer rains with more
forecast in the coming weeks. The Quarters at Moolooloo are very
comfortable and make a great base from which we explore the
Northern Flinders Ranges with its’ rugged gorges and many starkly
beautiful peaks.
JUNE/JULY we again follow the historic CANNING STOCK ROUTE
from North to South – a wonderful challenging track with
unexpected highlights over every dune – the rains may give us
carpets of wildflowers, everyone who travels this track is stunned by
the diversity of landscape, flora and fauna.
.STILL 4 SEATS AVAILABLE!!
In AUGUST/SEPT. I have (by request) scheduled a camping trip to
the Kimberleys, a destination many have visited, but few have had
the opportunity to journey there travelling the tracks set out by the
legendary Len Beadell. We take the Anne Beadell, Connie Sue, and
Gary Junction roads, cross the Canning Stock Route, and head
through the wilderness of the rugged Rudall River N.P., little known
but spectacular, and the largest NP in W.A. We include the Gibb
River Road and many of the spectacular gorges along the way.. This is
a mainly camping trip, but we do have two nights in a Motel at Broome
and several two night stays in wonderful places like the Mitchell
Plateau and the Bungle Bungles!! A great Adventure, BUT
BOOKINGS do not yet have the numbers to ensure departure.
Late news, the locals at Maree tell me that there is some water in
Lake Eyre(8.02.10) and that there is a good chance of more, nobody
can say how much.
Now a SPECIAL OFFER to get the year rolling. the first TEN
guests to book and deposit for any trip other than Easter in the
Flinders Ranges and I will include FREE RETURN AIRFARES TO
ADELAIDE from any capital city in Australia ….Be quick ,
I look forward to travelling with you soon, All the best
